UCO PRESENTS 26TH ANNUAL MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION INSTITUTE
The University of Central Oklahoma will present the 26th Annual Multicultural Institute, themed "Multicultural Education: The ME in AMErica," Friday, Feb. 27 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nigh University Center.
The Institute will feature nationally known keynote speakers and local presenters. Friday's banquet keynote speaker is Dr. Bradley Scott, director of the Intercultural Development Research Association. Saturday's luncheon speaker will be Dr. Paul Gorski who is the Founder of EdChange, a collaborative effort of educators, activists, and scholars, and also assistant professor at George Mason University, Fairfax, Va.
Other featured speakers include Heather Sparks, Oklahoma's 2009 Teacher of the Year, and Roger Rosenthal, executive director of Migrant Legal Action Program in Washington, D.C.
The Institute will also feature publishers' exhibits and multicultural entertainment.
Another highlight of the Institute is the presentation of awards for "Multicultural Citizen of the Year," "Multicultural Teacher of the Year," and "Bilingual Paraprofessional of the Year," along with several Multicultural Institute Teacher Incentive grants which give financial support to teachers for implementing multicultural activities and curriculum in their classrooms.
The Multicultural Institute will also include a Youth Leadership Session on Friday, Feb. 27 bringing about 80 to 120 secondary students to campus. One component of the Youth Session is an essay and poster contest to express their interpretation of multicultural education. The top four entrants will be honored at the Friday banquet and awarded a cash award.
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance for professional development purposes, and may also enroll for one or two hours of undergraduate or graduate college credit from UCO for additional tuition charges.
The concurrent sessions have been designed to assist teachers, administrators, counselors, and other educational personnel to understand and implement strategies that build cross-cultural appreciation and academic success.
Approximately 250 to 400 students and educators are expected to attend the Institute, which is co-sponsored by several central Oklahoma education agencies.
