UCO COLLEGE OF BUSINESS CHALLENGE TEAM PLACES IN TOP TEN

The University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Business Broncho Investment Research Challenge team placed in the top 10 in the 2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge of the Southwest at the University of Houston.

The challenge is a competition between 26 university-sponsored teams from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. The goal of the challenge is to promote best practices in equity research and to help develop the next generation of financial analysts.

University teams conducted a fundamental valuation on a designated company, U.S. Physical Therapy, an operator of physical and occupational therapy clinics, headquartered in Houston, resulting in a written buy, sell or hold thesis that was presented to a panel of judges from the investment profession. Ten finalist teams were chosen to participate in the oral presentation round at the regional finals.

Team members include Josh Sloan, a senior finance major from Oklahoma City; Jade Davis, a senior finance major from Midwest City, Oklahoma; Nik Volkhin, a senior finance major from Omsk, Russia; Ervell Boyd, a senior finance major from Edmond, Oklahoma; and Jay Leclercq, a senior finance and accounting major from Norman, Oklahoma.

“The research challenge was a great opportunity to gain practical experience with equity valuation,” Boyd said.

“It was truly a unique and rewarding experience that I was able to share with like-minded individuals who share the same passion for the capital markets. I feel honored to have been a part of an exceptionally bright group, with wonderful faculty guidance.  The research challenge reinforced my passion for the investment industry.”

R. Barry Ellis, Ph.D., along with V. Sivarama Krishnan, Ph.D., professors of finance at Central’s College of Business, serve as faculty sponsors. Cory J. Robinson, vice president and portfolio manager at Tom Johnson Investment Management, LLC, served as industry/practitioner mentor to the team.
