UCO BROADWAY TONIGHT WELCOMES BACK SINGER ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY
The University of Central Oklahoma Broadway Tonight Series, in partnership with Tres Amigos Productions, will present Tony Award-nominee Ann Hampton Callaway in concert at 8 p.m. Jan. 13-14 at the UCO Jazz Lab, 100 E. Fifth St. in Edmond.
A singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer, Callaway is best known for her Tony Award-nominated performance in the Broadway musical “Swing!” as well as her work as the writer and singer of the theme song for the hit 90’s television series “The Nanny.”
The performance marks a return to the UCO Jazz Lab for Callaway. She performed at the venue’s grand opening 15 years ago.
“Ann Hampton Callaway set the standard for what one can expect when they go to a performance at the UCO Jazz Lab, so it’s fitting for Broadway Tonight to bring her back to celebrate the success both she and the venue have enjoyed since her last visit,” said Greg White, Ph.D., director of UCO’s Broadway Tonight and assistant dean for the UCO College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD).
“She is just an incredible artist – one of a kind. She has this classic jazz sound mixed into her own unique style.”
Callaway has sung with more than 30 of the world’s top orchestras and has performed for President Clinton in Washington D.C. She was also featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and was awarded the 2013 MAC Award for “Show of the Year” for her tribute to Barbara Streisand.
Callaway made her first feature film appearance opposite Angelina Jolie and Matt Damon in Robert De Niro’s film “The Good Shepard,” performing the standard “Come Rain or Come Shine.” She has several critically acclaimed recordings and has been featured in albums alongside her sister Liz Callaway, who also made a name for herself as a Broadway singer and performed as a part of the Broadway Tonight Series season in 2013.
“We wanted this year’s season to be collaborative. We’ve worked with several different members of the community and have reached a diverse audience through the use of multiple UCO venues,” White said.
The 2016-17 Broadway Tonight Series season has hosted performances at Mitchell Hall Theatre, the CHK|Central Boathouse and, now, the UCO Jazz Lab. The season has also incorporated community auditions for supporting roles in productions.
Tickets for Callaway’s performance are $60. To purchase tickets, call 405-340-8552.
Callaway will also host a free and open-to-the-public master class on Jan. 12. For more information about the master class, contact Broadway Tonight at 405-974-2609.
Callaway’s performance and master class are co-presented by Tres Amigos Productions and sponsored, in part, by the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“We are so grateful for the support of our longtime friends at Tres Amigos and the Oklahoma Arts Council,” said Deborah Baucom, senior development manager for CFAD.
“It is because of their investment in CFAD that we are able to present performances of this caliber.”
