UCO INTRODUCES SOFTWARE ENGINEERING DEGREE

University of Central Oklahoma students have a new option in preparing for a career in the rapidly growing software development industry with the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering degree program, offered through the university’s College of Mathematics and Science. It is the first program of its kind offered by a public university in Oklahoma.

Software engineering is the study and application of engineering to the design, development, and maintenance of software. The degree program, introduced this fall, was created in response to recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that project employment of software developers to grow 22 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.

“The program is designed for students who have an interest in studying the principles and tools for engineering large-scale software systems,” said Gang Qian, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Computer Science.

“Students in this program will take many of the same courses as those in computer science, but will also learn additional topics like requirements engineering, software architecture, construction and testing.”

The curriculum of the new program is aligned with the requirements of the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.
