UCO CELEBRATES INAUGURAL FRESHMAN CONVOCATION, AWARDS $2,018 IN SCHOLARSHIPS
The University of Central Oklahoma hosted its first-ever Freshman Convocation Sunday in Hamilton Field House. The event served as the official welcome for Central’s Class of 2018 to the university’s academic community.
Convocation began with a ceremonial walk through Central Gateway, the arch in front of Old North, to signify the start of the students’ journey at Central. Graduates traditionally pass through the gateway as they walk into spring and fall commencement ceremonies.
University Provost John Barthell welcomed the freshmen to campus with praise for Central’s faculty.
“Soon you will be in your first classes with our outstanding faculty members who are experts in their disciplines and often some of the leading innovators in methods of instruction,” Barthell said.
“We commit to giving you the broadest educational experience we can provide you with in order to help you join the over 100,000 former students and current alumni who have donned regalia as they graduated from our institution, dating back to its origins as a teaching college in the 1890s.”
UCO President Don Betz, Ph.D., speaking to Central’s 123rd freshman class, conveyed the significance of their educational endeavor and the commitment of the university to support them in the achievement of their goals.
“We are here because you are here,” Betz said, speaking of the university’s faculty and staff.
“Our mission is your success. Success at UCO is to persist, achieve and graduate, and along your pathway, become encouraged, and perhaps inspired, to be a life-long learner.”
Convocation also included the awarding of more than $2,000 in tuition waivers to four lucky students.
“We wanted to provide a fun incentive for the Class of 2018, so we hid four envelopes under the chairs at convocation totaling $2,018,” said Jay Corwin, Ph.D., senior associate vice president in the Academic Advisement Center.
