UCO INTRODUCES SPANISH-LANGUAGE CAMPUS TOURS
The University of Central Oklahoma hopes to simplify the college selection process for bilingual prospective students with the introduction of Spanish-language campus tours in fall 2014.
The new tours are a response to requests from parents and students as well as the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
“On a campus tour it can be stressful for a bilingual student to have to translate information for their parents as well as soak in all the information for themselves. Our hope is that offering tours in Spanish will help both parties, as they’ll be able to take in all of the information in Spanish,” said Allison Fannon, coordinator for Office of Campus Tours and Events (CTE).
Sam Corrales, a sophomore fashion marketing major and a student ambassador in CTE, will conduct the monthly tours.
“These tours will give parents an easier way to stay involved and aware of where their students are getting their education. Language barriers are never easy to overcome, but by giving Spanish tours I know that UCO is really working to make Central a more welcoming environment for the Hispanic and Latino communities, “ said Corrales.
Central’s Spanish-language tours will be offered at noon on the second Monday of each month September-April. Tours are free, but registration is required on www.uco.edu/tours or by calling 405-974-2610.
