UCO SEEKS LUGGAGE DONATIONS FOR SERVICE PROJECT BENEFITTING AREA FOSTER CHILDREN
The University of Central Oklahoma’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center (VSLC) and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life are asking for the community’s help to make its Love Luggage project for foster children a success.
The VSLC will accept donations of new and gently used luggage through 5 p.m. Aug. 15 at its office in Nigh University Center Room 212 on Central’s campus.
Donated luggage will be cleaned and painted by students during Broncho Difference, an annual community service event, on Aug. 21. The VSLC has partnered with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to distribute the luggage to foster children throughout the state.
Children removed from the custody of their parents or guardians because of abuse or neglect in their homes often have only a trash bag to transport their belongings in. A piece of Love Luggage provides them with a sturdy, secure item for their clothes and personal items.
“The VSLC is honored to provide the community with an opportunity to help foster children in Oklahoma. This is a chance to make a meaningful ‘Broncho Difference’ in the life of a child or young adult. No matter if you’re donating luggage or a student volunteer, it’s a chance to help,” said Patrick Tadlock, assistant director of the VSLC.
Broncho Difference is a part of the university’s Stampede Week activities, celebrating the new school year and encouraging campus and community involvement among students, faculty and staff.
