METRO INTERNS CALL UCO RESIDENCE HALLS HOME FOR SUMMER
Interns from throughout the country for Chesapeake Energy, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), Select Physical Therapy and the Oklahoma Health Department are calling the University of Central Oklahoma home for the summer thanks to Central’s new Summer Intern Housing Program.
Given Central’s ideal location in the Oklahoma City metro, Central’s office of Housing and Dining saw an opportunity for the university to partner with area businesses, organizations and agencies to provide affordable, convenient housing for students working in the are this summer on a temporary basis.
Just in its first year, the program will house more than 40 students by summer’s end. Several groups have inquired about reserving space for 2015, bringing the anticipated number of interns for next year closer to 100.
“One thing that many companies love about our program is that we require the interns to abide by the same rules and policies we set for our students: no alcohol, no tobacco, no drugs and no weapons. These companies are investing in their futures and want to make sure they are hiring the best students possible,” said Jose Rodriguez, coordinator of sales and marketing for the Office of Housing and Dining.
Students from California to Maryland have settled into fully furnished two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments on campus, and employers have found that Central’s location provides both easy access to metro workplaces and the amenities students need. The all-bills-paid apartments include cable television, wireless Internet and parking at no extra charge.
Carlisa Curry, coordinator for the Fleming Scholar Program at OMRF, noted that safe and convenient accommodations for the program’s 12 students were the keys to selecting Central as the site for their students to be housed.
“UCO provides a good, general location for our students,” Curry said.
“They can easily walk to shopping and restaurants, the library and police station are across the street, and the clubhouse is staffed 24 hours a day.”
