UCO CHAMBERS LIBRARY AWARDS FELLOWSHIPS TO NORMAN, TULSA TEACHERS
The University of Central Oklahoma’s Max Chambers Library, through the support of Friends of the Chambers Library, recently awarded fellowships to two Oklahoma teachers.
Margo Loflin, a U.S. history teacher at Norman High School, and Hayley Hood, a multicultural and U.S. history teacher at Tulsa Union High School, were chosen from more than a dozen applicants for the $2,000 research grants. The grants will provide partial, short-term support to create four multi-disciplinary lesson plans to accompany a traveling trunk of the library’s Sidney Bray World War II collection.
“The files of longtime Edmond resident Sidney C. Bray, who was the regional director of the U.S. Savings Bond Program from 1942-1965, provide insight into U.S. efforts to mobilize the citizenry and finance our involvement in WWII,” said Carrie Bond, assistant director of development for Chambers Library.
The Bray collection includes many scrapbooks created by schools in central Oklahoma, documenting their fundraising efforts for the war.
“Many of these schools still exist today and the scrapbooks are wonderful primary resources that teachers can use in their classrooms. We hope the research and lesson plans that will be generated by these fellowships will make schools more aware of these great resources at UCO,” Bond said.
All Oklahoma K-12 certified teachers and junior, senior or graduate education majors were eligible to apply for the grants. Fellows are awarded $500 at the beginning of their residency, with the remaining $1,500 paid at the completion of the lesson plans.
“World War II is my favorite time period in U.S. History and I cannot wait to dig into the resources in the collection and write lessons to make the collection accessible to Oklahoma teachers,” said Loflin, a 24-year veteran of teaching.
Hood will begin her teaching career at Tulsa Union High School in the fall.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to explore this collection of historical artifacts and bring them to life in the classroom. I am looking forward to the unique experience of researching and creating relevant lessons for teachers to use in high schools across the state,” Hood said.
