PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF AMERICA COLLECTION EXHIBITION PREMIERS AT UCO

The University of Central Oklahoma’s Max Chambers Library will host an exhibition of the Oklahoma City-based Photographic Society of America’s (PSA) collection April 3 through May 31 in the south elevator lobby on the library’s main floor.

A free, open-to-the-public reception for the exhibition, titled “Selections from the Photographic Society of America,” will be held from 3-4 p.m. April 3 in the exhibition space.

The collection, which contains more than 5,000 historically important photographic prints dating from 1913 to the present, was organized and installed by Central’s Curating Photographic Collections class under the supervision of instructor Jon Burris.

Burris, a recognized art consultant, author, photographer and curator of the collection, was instrumental in bringing the PSA collection to Central. It was transferred to the university in September of 2013 and will be on loan for 10 years.

Multiple projects are being planned that will leverage the collection for research and as a teaching resource on the history of photography.

Established in 1934, the society is an international organization open to anyone interested in photography. It now serves more than 6,000 members in 70 countries. Originally based in Philadelphia, the PSA relocated its headquarters to Oklahoma in 1988.
