ACM@UCO TO HOST MASTER CLASS WITH ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE JOHN OATES
Advancing its commitment to connect students directly to the contemporary music industry, the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma (ACM@UCO) will host a master class featuring Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee John Oates of famed duo Hall & Oates at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the ACM@UCO Performance Lab located at 329 E. Sheridan Ave. in downtown Oklahoma City.
The class will include an interview with Oates by ACM@UCO CEO Scott Booker followed by a Q-and-A session. The class is free and open to the public.
Oates is best known as guitarist and songwriter of half of the rock and soul duo Hall & Oates, which achieved fame in the 1970s and '80s for their Billboard No. 1 hits “Rich Girl,” “Private Eyes,” and “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” among others. Hall & Oates will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this April and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. The duo has also been recognized with numerous American Music and MTV awards as well as multiple Grammy award nominations.
Oates also has released four solo collections since 1999. He is currently working on a project called “A Good Road to Follow,” a series of digital singles that are being released throughout 2014.
“John Oates’ music has been a part of the greater soundtrack to most of our lives and it will be incredible to hear about his process and history,” said Booker.
“It’s not an accident that Hall & Oates have sold over 16 million records in the United States alone! It will be thrilling to talk with John about his success.”
Based on the successful model of the original ACM in Guildford, the ACM@UCO is an innovative contemporary music program unlike any other in the U.S., offering an industry-based, “real world” educational experience for those interested in a career in contemporary music. Students can earn a two-year associate’s degree in bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, music business, music production and vocals, or continue in the Bachelor of Applied Technology in Contemporary Music program.
Classes are taught by music industry veterans, and supplemented with master classes featuring invited guests, like Oates. Past guests include Ted Dwane and Ben Lovett, members of Mumford and Sons; Nile Rodgers of Chic; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jackson Browne; singer/songwriter Ben Folds; The Who’s Roger Daltrey; Dawes, American folk-rock band; Warner Bros. President Livia Tortella; and The Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd.
