UCO’S BROADWAY TONIGHT SERIES PRESENTS TONY AND EMMY AWARD-WINNER HAL HOLBROOK IN ‘MARK TWAIN TONIGHT’

The University of Central Oklahoma’s Broadway Tonight Series will present Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor Hal Holbrook in his critically acclaimed one-man performance “Mark Twain Tonight!” 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Mitchell Hall Theater, located on Central’s campus.

Performing as 70-year-old Mark Twain for more than half a century, Holbrook’s “Mark Twain Tonight!” won a Tony Award in 1966.

Holbrook has memorized more than a dozen hours of Mark Twain’s writing to compose the 90-minute performance, which alternates between different Twain texts from show to show.

“Holbrook is always switching up the show, utilizing different essays, anecdotes and fictional pieces from Mark Twain to make sure that the topics remain relevant to today’s time,” said Greg White, Ph.D., director and producer of the Broadway Tonight series.

Matching the tone of the literary canonized dark humorist and satirist Mark Twain, Holbrook’s performance balances social commentary ranging from racism to politics to religion.

“Holbrook always shoots for a diverse program and gauges his audience to present an unforgettable, legendary and personalized experience. He’s a master of performance,” White added.

While Holbrook has performed “Mark Twain Tonight!” on stage more than 2,000 times, he also has a handful of movie and television experiences under his belt.

Holbrook was nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in “Into the Wild” and was cast as Preston Blair in “Lincoln,” Mr. Pappy in “Men of Honor” and Lou Mannheim in “Wall Street.”

Holbrook also won four Emmy Awards for his television performances in “Abraham Lincoln,” “The Bold Ones: The Senator” and “Pueblo.”

While at Central, Holbrook will also teach a master class for Central theatre students.

Tickets for “Mark Twain Tonight!” are $40 and can be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Theater Box Office at 405-974-3375 or visiting www.click4tix.com/uco.
