UCO COMMUNICATIONS, ADVERTISING STUDENTS CALLED ‘RISING STARS’ OF THE INDUSTRY
Three University of Central Oklahoma students have been awarded Oklahoma City Ad Club scholarships totaling $6,000.
Kenna Baker of Yukon, Laura Lynch of Edmond and Darrell Potter of Agra each received a $2,000 cash scholarship on Nov. 13 during the club’s annual Career Day.
Lynch and Potter, senior strategic communications students, received Journalism Art Communication (JAC) awards, scholarships reserved for students majoring or minoring in a communications-related field.
Baker, a senior graphic design student, received the inaugural Jeanie Ruedy Commercial Art/Graphic Design Scholarship. The scholarship is reserved for students majoring or minoring in an art-related field. Ruedy has been a member of Ad Club for more than 50 years and self-funded the scholarship.
The 2013 selection committees for both awards found that Baker, Lynch and Potter possessed the traits, communication skills and intellect best representing the highest standards of industry professionalism and ethics.
“For the JAC scholarships, we look for students who are passionate about journalism and communications, who are involved in those arenas, and really, who are focused on being involved in the future of advertising and communications in Oklahoma,” said Armand McCoy, Oklahoma City Ad Club scholarship committee member and business development director for Trifecta Communications in Moore.
“The students we select are the rising stars of the industry. UCO’s candidates were all extremely impressive, not only on paper, but in their interviews as well. UCO is doing an awesome job in turning out professionals who are the future of communications in Oklahoma City, the metro and in the state as a whole,” McCoy continued.
Winners for each award are selected based on academic records, letters of recommendation, essays, samples of work and an interview with the selection committee.
Founded in 1907, Oklahoma City Ad Club provides continuing education and connectivity for the Oklahoma City advertising community through monthly meetings, programs and new media channels.
