UCO NAMED BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF OKLAHOMA ‘UNIVERSITY CHAMPION’ FOR 2013

The University of Central Oklahoma has been recognized as the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma “University Champion of the Year” for 2013.

“It is an honor to have been chosen as University Champion, and we hope UCO’s relationship with Big Brothers Big Sisters will grow even stronger in the future. The organization is truly making a difference in the lives of young people in our community and changing our future for the better,” said Sharra Hynes, director of Central’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center (VSLC).

UCO provides broad support to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma, including mentor recruitment from the student body, faculty and staff, as well as volunteer recruitment and fundraising for annual events. In 2013, UCO’s 14 “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” teams raised more than $10,000.

“Universities have always been a wonderful resource for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and UCO is no exception. Currently, we have 18 mentors from the university with an additional 36 in the enrollment process,” said Rachel Hernandez, Oklahoma City area director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma.

The VSLC is planning a significant drive for “Bigs,” or adult mentors, to meet the needs of Edmond’s Orvis Risner Elementary School.

“We hope that no child will have to be placed on a waiting list for a mentor – UCO is filled with wonderful role models and we hope that students, faculty and staff will step up into mentoring roles in the future,” Hynes continued.
