UCO PRESENTS WORLD-RENOWNED VIOLINIST CLAUDE CHALHOUB IN CONCERT
The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present guest artist and world-renowned violinist Claude Chalhoub for two performances featuring both the UCO Symphony Orchestra and the UCO Chamber Orchestra.
Chalhoub will perform his original compositions with students in the UCO Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 and the UCO Chamber Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19, each in Mitchell Hall Theater.
A true virtuoso violinist, Chalhoub grew up not only with the sounds of his beloved Arabic music, but also the cacophony of bombs exploding outside his home in Beirut, Lebanon, as the city once considered the Paris of the Middle East was savaged by civil war.
A self-taught musician, Chalhoub was accepted in the Royal Academy of Music in London as a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship.
Chalhoub began gaining international attention as a violinist and composer, joining the Divan East West Orchestra in Wiemar, Germany as concertmaster during its premiere year alongside leading musicians including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and conductor Daniel Barenboim.
His work with the Divan East West Orchestra landed Chalhoub a recording contract in Los Angeles, Calif., which blossomed into Chalhoub composing music for film with his works featured in several Oliver Stone films.
Around the world, Chalhoub is famous for his composition and musical style that fuses both classical and Arabic genre.
“I’m looking forward to our students having the opportunity to work with someone who is so passionate in his art and so demanding in his pursuit of excellence, yet has such a gentle and nurturing spirit when working with other musicians,” said Ralph Morris, D.M.A., conductor of the UCO Symphony Orchestra.
“It will also be a treat for audience members to hear such a unique fusion of eastern and western music displayed in Claude’s compositions and performances.”
Tickets are $8 for adults; $6 for faculty and staff with a valid I.D.; and $4 for UCO students with a valid I.D. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Box Office at 405-974-3375 or by visiting www.click4tix.com/uco.
