UCO TO HOST MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID WORKSHOP OCT. 17
The University of Central Oklahoma Wellness Center will host a Mental Health First Aid Workshop 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, UCO and Variety Care.
The workshop aims to help individuals further understand mental illness, respond to psychiatric emergencies and provide initial assistance to an individual showing symptoms of a mental health crisis.
The target audience for the course includes educators and school administrators, college and university leaders, human resource professionals, members of faith communities, health care professionals, police, security and first responders, policymakers, mental health authorities, substance abuse professionals, homeless shelter staff and volunteers, social workers, family members and caring citizens.
The workshop will inform participants on many different topics including the prevalence of mental illness in the U.S., warning signs and risk factors for depression and various disorders and a five-step action plan, along with resources, to help those in need.
“Mental health issues are a growing concern and it’s important that our society is informed on how to help people,” said Danielle Dill, director of fitness and health, UCO Wellness Center.
Certified Mental Health First Aid instructor David Howlett, M.Ed., LPC, will lead the workshop. Howlett is also the Director of Behavioral Health for Variety Care.
Registration is limited to 24 participants. The deadline for registration is Thursday, Oct. 10. The registration fee is $65, which includes a workbook, educational material, lunch and refreshments.
To register, contact Pam Boatwright, System Safety, Health and Environment Resource Center coordinator, at email@example.com or 405-225-9458. Participants can pay by purchase order, cash or check only.
The workshop will take place in Room 127, UCO Wellness Center.
