ACM@UCO TO HOST MASTER CLASS WITH FOLK-ROCK BAND DAWES
Advancing its commitment to connect students directly to the contemporary music industry, the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma (ACM@UCO) will host a master class featuring American folk rock band Dawes at noon, Friday, Oct. 4 at the ACM@UCO Performance Lab, 329 E. Sheridan Ave., downtown Oklahoma City.
Founded in Los Angeles in 2009, Dawes includes brothers Taylor (guitar/vocals) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums), along with Wylie Gelber (bass) and Tay Strathairn (keyboards). Over the past four years the band has released three albums including “Stories Don’t End” in April 2013. Dawes is currently on tour promoting the new album and is scheduled to perform in Oklahoma City at the Diamond Ballroom at 7 p.m. Oct. 4.
During the master class Dawes band members will discuss their success in the music industry and class attendees will have the opportunity to ask them questions about their careers in music.
“Jackson Browne turned me on to Dawes. I think they are one of the best up-and-coming bands from the ‘new’ Laurel Canyon scene,” said Scott Booker, ACM@UCO CEO.
“I know that they’ll have great insights on being an artist in the thriving LA music scene.”
The master class is free and open to the public.
Based on the successful model of the original ACM in Guildford, the ACM@UCO is an innovative contemporary music program unlike any other in the U.S., offering an industry-based, “real world” educational experience for those interested in a career in contemporary music. Students can earn a two-year associate’s degree in bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, music business, music production and vocals, or continue in the Bachelor of Applied Technology in Contemporary Music program.
Classes are taught by music industry veterans, and supplemented with master classes featuring invited guests, like Dawes. Past guests include Ted Dwane and Ben Lovett, members of Mumford and Sons; Nile Rodgers of Chic; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jackson Browne; singer/songwriter Ben Folds; The Who’s Roger Daltrey; Warner Bro.’s Records President Livia Tortella; and The Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd.
