UCO PRESENTS THE AWARD-WINNING PLAY ‘THE GOAT OR, WHO IS SYLVIA’
The University of Central Oklahoma Theatre Arts Department will present a production of the award winning play “The Goat or, Who is Sylvia” at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 19-21 and 2 p.m., Sept. 22 in Mitchell Hall Theater, located on campus.
Due to content, this play is strictly for mature audiences only.
Written in 2002 by three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee, “The Goat or, Who is Sylvia” won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Play and was nominated for the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Hailed for exploring the limits of human tolerance and social taboos, the play follows middle-aged architect Martin and his wife and son as they undergo a series of family crises.
“The first time I saw this play I was in awe,” explained Daisy Nystul, M.F.A., Central Theatre Arts professor and director of this production.
“It takes you on a rollercoaster ride. At times it will be the funniest thing you’ve ever seen and at times it is painfully tragic.”
The small cast of four Central students auditioned for the play last spring.
“This is a difficult play to perform,” said Nystul in reference to the plot points that, if taken at face value, have been criticized by some as overly bizarre and controversial.
“But we want to expose our students to plays that are of Pulitzer Prize caliber. We want them to work with the best writing out there.”
Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for senior citizens, faculty and staff with a UCO I.D., and non-UCO students. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Theater Box Office at 405-974-3375 or visiting www.click4tix.com/uco. Central students can retain one free ticket with their student UCO I.D. at the box office.
