UCO TO HONOR 9/11 VICTIMS THROUGH REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY, SERVICE ACTIVITIES
University of Central Oklahoma’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center will commemorate the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a series of activities on Sept. 11, beginning with the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 9 a.m. Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb will join UCO President Don Betz, Ph.D., as featured speakers.
Immediately following the ceremony, Central students, faculty and staff will plant approximately 2,500 American flags in the ground around Broncho Lake on Central’s campus in remembrance of the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11.
Later that day, UCO students will prepare spaghetti dinners and deliver over 300 “Thank You” packages to more than 18 local firehouses. The packages include a handwritten note from a UCO student, faculty or staff member. In addition to Lamb’s remarks at the ceremony, the lieutenant governor will write a thank you note to be included in one of the packages.
“There is a spirit of service in our state that is exemplified in so many ways – particularly surrounding local, state and national tragedies. On a national day of service, it is appropriate for our campus to pause and remember why we are serving on this particular day – to remember the lives who were lost, the families who were impacted, the heroism of our first responders, and the ways in which our country was forever changed because of 9/11,” said Sharra Hynes, Ph.D., director of the Volunteer and Service Learning Center.
“For many of our students, 9/11 is a memory from their young childhood. Having an annual day of remembrance and service allows us to teach students about this historical event and have them experience service first-hand.”
The community is invited to attend the Remembrance Ceremony and help plant flags.
