UCO’S BROADWAY TONIGHT SERIES CONTINUES WITH TONY AWARD-WINNING TAP DANCER SAVION GLOVER
The University of Central Oklahoma’s Broadway Tonight Series continues with a performance by tap dancing legend Savion Glover, presenting his original choreographed piece “SoLo in Time” at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 6 in UCO’s Mitchell Hall Theater.
Glover won a Tony Award in 1996 for his choreography in Broadway’s “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk,” in which he also held the leading role. However, Glover’s successful career began long before such accolades.
Glover first performed on Broadway as a preteen, starring in the leading role of “The Tap Dance Kid.” As a teenager, Glover was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in “Black and Blue,” becoming one of the youngest males ever to be nominated for a Tony Award.
Glover has since gone on to choreograph Broadway productions and films, such as “Happy Feet.”
The piece he will perform at Central, “SoLo in Time,” is a tap dancing tribute to flamenco.
“Savion grew up surrounded and trained by tap dance legends at a young age,” said Greg White, Ph.D, director of UCO’s Broadway Tonight Series.
“He truly has absorbed that energy and talent and carried a unique tap style forward. Savion is just absolutely genius.”
During Glover’s visit he will lead a dance master class for Central dance students.
Audience members can meet Glover at a reception after the performance.
Tickets are $45 for orchestra seating and $40 for balcony seating. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Theater box office at 405-974-3775 or online at www.click4tix.com/uco.
In addition to Glover’s performance, the UCO Broadway Tonight 2013-14 season will include special performances by Hollywood actor Greg Edelman and Tony Award-winning actor Hal Holbrook.
