UCO DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN OPENS NEW LETTERPRESS AND PROTOTYPING LAB
The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Design will open its new letterpress and prototyping lab with a reception at 4 p.m., July 31 at 1020 Waterwood Parkway in Edmond.
The reception is free and open to the public.
The lab includes printing equipment that familiarizes users with major benchmarks in the evolution of printing.
Equipment encompassing the history of printing includes a Vandercook Letterpress machine, a replica of Gutenburg’s invention of movable type and the Chandler and Price Platten, a 19th century invention which uses flat plates that give the impression of letterpress printing.
More modern machinery includes a 3-D color printer.
“We look forward to this lab helping students learn and appreciate the technology of the past and the future,” said Ruki Ravikumar, M.F.A., chair of the department of design.
“There are very limited opportunities in this region for creative professionals to experiment with this type of equipment, so we hope this lab creates opportunities for collaboration between UCO design students, faculty and creative professionals,” Ravikumar continued.
The lab will support coursework within the design department; however, the community can look forward to future workshops that offer opportunities to learn about letterpress and prototyping.
