ACM@UCO BANDS TO PERFORM AT ‘ROCK FOR OKLAHOMA’ EVENT ON JULY 23
Students and alumni from the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma (ACM@UCO) will do their part to help those impacted by the May tornadoes by doing what they do best – performing. Various ACM@UCO bands are a part of the line-up at the “Rock for Oklahoma” benefit concert event July 23 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in downtown Oklahoma City.
ACM@UCO bands will perform in and around the arena beginning at 5 p.m. prior to the headlining acts that will perform on the main stage starting at 6:30 p.m. Additionally, ACM@UCO bands will play between acts in the arena once the concert starts. Headlining acts include Kings of Leon, The Flaming Lips, Jackson Browne, and Built To Spill, among other special guests.
Proceeds from the event will go to the United Way to benefit the victims of the tornadoes that hit the metro areas of Moore and Oklahoma City.
Among the ACM@UCO groups performing are Fos, Chateau, Them Apples, and Ripple Green.
“The students and faculty from ACM@UCO immediately wanted to help the victims of the May storms. This is a great way for them to help the community and also see firsthand how a major event is put together,” said Scott Booker, CEO of ACM@UCO.
“Everyone in the ACM@UCO community, from students to staff, are excited to be able to aid in the relief efforts. Our involvement opens the door for members of the community who aren’t going to the concert to be involved in the activities outside of the venue and to show support by donating to the United Way,” he continued.
The ACM@UCO opened its doors to its first class of students in August 2009 on one floor of the Oklahoma Hardware Building in Bricktown on Flaming Lips Alley. Since then, the program has grown to fill three floors of the building and the ACM@UCO Performance Lab, also located in Bricktown.
Based on the successful model from the original ACM in England, the ACM@UCO is an innovative music program unlike any other in the U.S., offering an industry-based, “real world” educational experience for those interested in a career in contemporary music.
From its location in downtown Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district, the ACM@UCO offers two-year associate degree programs in bass, drums, guitar, keyboard, music business, music production and vocals, with the option to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Technology degree.
