UCO SCHOOL OF MUSIC WRAPS UP SEMESTER WITH THREE NIGHTS OF CONCERTS

The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present three concerts featuring the talents of Central students April 30 – May 2 at Mitchell Hall Theater located on the UCO campus.

First, the UCO Symphony Orchestra will perform their annual concert featuring two Central student soloists at 7:30 p.m., April 30.

Student flutist Hilary Carden will be the soloist for "Fantasia Brilliance for Flute and Orchestra," based on themes from Georges Bizet’s "Carmen," and student vocalist Emerald Lessley will be the soloist for an aria from Wolfgang Amadeus Morzart’s "Cosi Fan Tutte."

The UCO Symphony Orchestra will perform other pieces in congruence with the theme of "Telling a Story" before the grand finale performance of "Past of Yelong," a composition written by Chinese composer Shahua Zhu, father of Central professor of violin, Hong Zhu, D.M.A.

The following evening, the UCO Symphonic Band will perform a variety of standard band compositions at 7:30 p.m., May 1.

Some students will be performing on both their primary instrument of study and their secondary instrument of study.

"It’s one thing to study a secondary instrument in a techniques class. It’s another thing to have performed on two different types of instruments," said David Hanan, D.M.A., associate director of bands.

"It’s a real educational experience that adds a level of versatility to our students."

Wrapping up the series of music performances will be a concert performed by the UCO Wind Symphony at 7:30 p.m., May 2.

The program will include "Until Our Rest," composed by Central alumnus Chelsea Williams, and Steve Danyen’s "The World Alive," a musical piece that will accompany a video illustrating artworks created by Ansel Adams.

The concert will also include the premiere of the music video the UCO Wind Symphony, UCO Symphonic Band and Oklahoma City Thunder mascot Rumble recorded for the NBA Playoffs.

Tickets to each concert are $8 for adults; $6 for senior citizens, Central faculty and staff, and non-UCO students; and $4 for Central students with a Central ID. To purchase tickets, call the Mitchell Hall Theater Box Office at 405-974-3375.
