UCO NAMED US EPA GREEN POWER CHALLENGE CHAMPION FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR

For the third consecutive year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) named the University of Central Oklahoma a 2012-13 Individual Conference Champion of the College and University Green Power Challenge for using more green power than any other school in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Since April 2006, the EPA’s Green Power Partnership has tracked and recognized the collegiate athletic conferences with the highest combined green-power purchases in the nation.

The Individual Conference Champion Award recognizes the school that has made the largest individual purchase of green power within a qualifying conference.

Beating its conference rivals by purchasing 26 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power, Central currently receives 100-percent of its energy from wind power, helping to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the campus’ electricity usage.

Per EPA estimates, Central’s purchase of green power from Edmond Electric is equivalent to offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions of more than 3,000 average American homes, or nearly 4,000 passenger vehicles, annually.

Thirty collegiate conferences and 76 schools competed in the 2012-13 challenge, collectively purchasing nearly 2.2 billion kWh of green power.

The EPA’s Green Power Challenge is open to all U.S. colleges, universities and conferences.

Central’s relationship with the EPA began in 2006, when the university joined the Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program that encourages organizations to use green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use.
