GRAMMY-NOMINATED TRUMPETER DAVE DOUGLAS TO PERFORM WITH 5th STREET JAZZ COLLECTIVE
The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present a performance featuring the 5th Street Jazz Collective with special guest trumpeter Dave Douglas at 7:30 p.m., April 9 at the UCO Jazz Lab, located at 100 E. Fifth Street in Edmond.
This concert will wrap up the 2012-2013 UCO Faculty Artist Concert Series, a performance series featuring the talents of Central music faculty members.
The 5th Street Jazz Collective, Central’s faculty jazz combo, will open the first half of the concert with an original composition by Michael Geib, UCO instructor of string bass, and several other diverse arrangements ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz to more contemporary styles.
The 5th Street Jazz Collective features Lee Rucker, trumpeter, Jeff Kidwell, trombonist, Danny Vaughan, guitarist, Dennis Borycki, pianist, Michael Geib, bassist, David Hardman, percussionist, and Brian Gorrell, saxophonist.
Award-winning and internationally recognized trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas will join the combo for the second half of the concert.
“Mr. Douglas is one of the most important jazz trumpeters of modern times, his music having influenced the direction of modern jazz, especially with his unique compositions that fuse together diverse musical styles,” said Brian Gorrell, head of the UCO jazz studies division.
A native of New York, Douglas is in his second year as the International Jazz Artist-in-Residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
The two-time Grammy nominee is also a multiple-winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll Trumpeter of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Composer of the Year and won the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship and the Aaron Copland Award.
Douglas will be performing his original compositions and arrangements, including “Be Still My Soul” and “The Presidents.”
Douglas was drawn to perform in the UCO Faculty Artist Concert Series because it raises scholarship funds for Central music students.
“Every year, the Faculty Artist Concert Series raises about $10,000 for scholarships,” said Keith White, Ph.D., chair of the School of Music.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling the UCO School of Music at 405-974-5004. Admission is free for Central students, faculty and staff with a Central I.D. Half of the proceeds will go toward scholarships and the rest will support the school.
