UCO To Promote Healthy Lifestyles With Series of Events In Celebration of National Nutrition Month

UCO TO PROMOTE HEALTHY LIFESTYLES WITH SERIES OF EVENTS IN CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
The University of Central Oklahoma Healthy Campus Initiative will host weekly events throughout March on Central’s campus and in the Edmond area for National Nutrition Month.
National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. The campaign focuses on making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
The month’s events will kick off with “Supermarket Smarts” at 4:30 p.m., March 4, 1 p.m., March 14 and 1 p.m., March 28 at the Homeland on Danforth and Bryant in Edmond. UCO Peer Health Leaders will teach participants how to shop for recommended food groups and read food labels, as well as tips for finding the healthiest options while touring the supermarket. The UCO Campus Cook program will also host a series of healthy cooking demonstrations throughout the month. The first demonstration on March 8 will teach participants how to create healthy desserts. On March 11 participants will learn how to make a healthy Indian dinner. The last demonstration on March 29 will focus on cooking healthy Mexican cuisine. Each demonstration starts at 1:30 p.m. in the kitchen of the Human Environmental Sciences building on campus. Reservations are required to attend this event and can be made by emailing Brittney Criswell, Central’s health promotion coordinator, at email@example.com.
Other events include “Broncho Bites” and “Re-Think Your Drink,” both from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the clock by Broncho Lake. Broncho Bites encourages participants to eat more fruits and vegetables, providing samples of familiar and exotic produce. Re-Think Your Drink urges participants to sample sugar-free drinks and to pledge to only drink sugar-free drinks the last week of March.
Every Wednesday in March from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. visitors to the Nigh University Center will find the “Ask a Dietetics Student” table near the food court. Students in Central’s nutrition, dietetics, and food management programs will answer questions about eating nutritious meals and living a healthy lifestyle and offer free nutrition resources and educational materials.
National Nutrition Month at Central is sponsored by UCO Healthy Campus in partnership with Mercy Clinic at UCO, the Wellness Center, UCO Peer Health Leaders, the Student Association of Nutrition & Dietetics, Housing and Dining Services, and the Oklahoma City-County Health Department.
