UCO RAISES AWARENESS FOR BREAST CANCER WITH ‘PAINT THE CAMPUS PINK’ WEEK AND BIG PINK VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT
The University of Central Oklahoma will join the fight against breast cancer by offering the campus and community a series of activities, including Paint the Campus Pink Week, Feb. 23-28, and the Big Pink Volleyball Tournament, Mar. 4-7.
“Attending these events is not only a fun way for students to be involved, but it is also a great way for Campus Activities to tie educational topics into our programming on campus,” said Courtney James, assistant director of Campus Activities.
“One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Based on our current enrollment at Central, this translates to 1,244 female students being diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.”
The student-led Big Pink Committee developed “Paint the Campus Pink Week,” kicking off with the Pink Zone Basketball Games on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Hamilton Field House. The UCO Bronchos women’s team will tip off at 1:30 p.m. and the men’s team at 3:30 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to wear pink and students will pass out educational materials and share statistics about breast cancer. There will also be interactive games during halftime.
On Monday, Feb. 25 in the Nigh University Center (NUC) students will have the opportunity to sign ribbons that will be placed all over campus to remind students of breast cancer and the people fighting for a cure.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Central community is invited to feast on burgers at the blue tent by Broncho Lake. The lunch will be themed after the 1997 Nickelodeon movie “Good Burger.”
To continue the week’s festivities, faculty and staff are invited to dress down in jeans and pink for “Pink Day,” Thursday, Feb. 28.
Paint the Campus Pink Week will conclude with the Breastival Festival 7–10 p.m., Feb. 28 in the NUC. This event will be held in conjunction with the Student Programming Board sponsored event, “Invasion of the UC.” Students will enjoy free fair-style food, sumo wrestling, big shoe basketball, crafts, and arcade games.
Starting Mar. 4, the Big Pink Volleyball tournament is a weeklong, philanthropic volleyball tournament at the UCO Wellness Center that features a giant twist – teams play with a four-foot pink volleyball.
The cost to participate is $5 per person, with 6-10 people on a team. Teams will be assigned a time to play in the single-elimination tournament. Fans and team members can order T-shirts at the event for $10 for a short-sleeved shirt and $12 for a long-sleeved shirt.
All proceeds raised will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help men and women affected by breast cancer in the Central Oklahoma area.
Team registration must be submitted online by 5 p.m., Feb. 28. People of all physical abilities from the Central campus as well as the metro-area community are welcome to participate.
