UCO HOSTS V-WEEK TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
The University of Central Oklahoma Women’s Outreach Center and the Women of Many Ethnic Nationalities (W.O.M.E.N.) will host a week of events to raise awareness for violence against women during V-Week, Feb. 12- 14.
“V-Week is an international campaign that aims to raise awareness and put a stop to violence perpetrated against women all over the world. Many of these acts of violence go unnoticed by the public eye or are largely ignored by some judicial courts. V-Week hopes to empower women and to help them love themselves for who they are, not who society wants them to be,” said Tess Bromme, student coordinator for the Women’s Outreach Center.
“These events aren’t just for women, they are for anyone who has a special woman in their life, a daughter, a wife, a mom, or a sister. Standing up for women takes everyone standing up together.”
Events for V-Week include:
- “Until the Violence Stops”, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, Heritage Room, Nigh University Center (NUC): This documentary shows the impact the V-Day movement has made across the globe in the efforts to stop violence against women of all ages.
- “The Vagina Monologues,” 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, Radke Recital Hall, Center for Transformative Learning: Central students, faculty and staff will perform the award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues.” The show is free, but donations will be collected at the end of the performance to benefit the Oklahoma Women’s Coalition, a local charity that hopes to strengthen the lives of women in our own community.
- Safe Love Table, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, Food Court, NUC: This table will provide UCO students with relationship advice and free Valentines Day candy. Also, donations will be collected for the Oklahoma City branch of the YWCA.
- One Billion Rising, 2– 3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, Ballroom B, NUC: The UCO community is invited to dance to support the demand to end violence against women. There will be a DJ and anyone who attends will be able to sign a pledge stating that they won’t stand for or participate in the status quo that says violence against women is normal. The first 150 participants will get a free t-shirt.
