UCO STUDENT FLUTIST ADVANCES TO REGIONAL DIVISION COMPETITION

University of Central Oklahoma senior music major and flutist Delara Hashemi recently won the state level Music Teacher National Association (MTNA) competition in the Young Artist Woodwind category, advancing her to the division finals on Jan. 13 in Arkadelphia, Ark.

“I was so excited when I heard that Delara had won the state level.  As far as I know, Delara is the first UCO music student to win in this category and at this level,” said Emily Butterfield, D.M.A., UCO assistant professor of music.

The Edmond Santa Fe High School graduate is now 12 years into studying the flute and performs in the UCO Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, various chamber ensembles and opera/musical theatre productions.  She performed in the National Flute Association Collegiate Flute Choir at national conventions in 2009 and 2011 and was a winner of the University Concerto Competition in April 2011.

Competing against MTNA state level winners from Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, Hashemi will perform flute and piano works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Philippe Gaubert, Frank Martin, and Robert Dick at the Division Finals.

The winner of the Division Finals competition will compete at the MTNA National Convention in March 2013.

“Winning the state round competition is an exciting opportunity for Delara and shows other music students what is possible.  We are preparing now for the next round,” added Butterfield.

MTNA, an association consisting of nearly 22,000 members in all 50 states and more than 500 local affiliates, strives to advance the value of music study and music-making amongst teachers, students, and society as a whole.

The MTNA performance competition provides both an educational experience for students and recognition of exceptionally talented young artists.
