DELFEAYO MARSALIS TO PERFORM WITH UCO JAZZ ENSEMBLES DEC. 1
The University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Studies Division will present a special performance featuring Delfeayo Marsalis, Grammy Award-winning music producer and trombonist, in concert with the UCO Jazz Ensembles at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 in UCO’s Mitchell Hall Theater.
Reviewers have labeled Marsalis as “one of the freshest modern voices on the trombone to arrive in the 90s.”
“Delfeayo Marsalis will bring a wealth of experience to our students as both a jazz artist and music producer,” said Brian Gorrell, director of the UCO Jazz Studies Division.
As a trombonist, Marsalis has released three critically acclaimed solo albums. He has toured internationally with legendary jazz musicians such as Art Blakey and Slide Hampton and appeared in the legendary Ken Burns documentary film “Jazz.”
As a producer, Marsalis has worked on over 75 major-label recordings, several of which have won Grammys.
Marsalis will perform one song with UCO’s Jazz Ensemble II and a full set of songs with the top Jazz Ensemble I, some of which are Marsalis’ original arrangements and compositions.
The UCO Jazz Ensemble I was recently named the “Best Large Jazz Ensemble” in the collegiate category of DownBeat Magazine’s 35th Annual Student Music Awards. DownBeat Magazine is considered one of the most prestigious jazz publications in the jazz world.
While jazz performances are typically held at the UCO Jazz Lab, this concert will be performed at Mitchell Hall Theater to enable more to attend the performance. In 2005 Delfeayo Marsalis’ brother, Wynton Marsalis, performed to a sold-out audience in Mitchell Hall Theater.
“It’s great to have a member of the Marsalis family back at UCO,” added Gorrell.
Tickets are $20 for premium seating and $15 for general admission and can be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Theater Box Office at 405-974-3375.
