BLANCHARD NATIVE ALLORA HERRIN CROWNED ‘MISS UCO 2013’
University of Central Oklahoma senior Allora Herrin, a native of Blanchard, will advance to the Miss Oklahoma pageant after being crowned Miss University of Central Oklahoma 2013 on Oct. 6 during the university's 37th annual scholarship pageant.
“Before the pageant, I thought I was going to be a nervous wreck, but I actually was very excited. I think my nerves were settled because all the girls competing were so kind and we had a blast together,” said Herrin.
“Even when my shoe broke right before the swimsuit competition, they did an awesome job of keeping me calm and helping me fix it!”
Her platform is “Bridging the Gap,” which is a non-profit organization that helps teens succeed and be successful after foster care.
“With my major being family life education, I have a lot of opportunities to work with families that are involved with foster care. Through my experience, I have noticed that there is a huge need for adolescent care after foster care,” Herrin said.
“My goal is to first bring awareness of the struggles that teens are facing after they age out of foster care. I also want to be able to help the teens get plugged into groups and organizations to better help them transition into adulthood and be able to succeed as adults.”
Allen competed in smaller pageants when she was young, but this was her first qualifying pageant for Miss Oklahoma.
Herrin’s new title means she will represent Central at next year's Miss Oklahoma pageant held in June in Tulsa, which is a preliminary for the Miss America pageant.
“I am so excited to represent Central as Miss UCO. When they called my name, I was a little bit in shock! I jumped up and down because I could not control my excitement.”
In addition to the trophy, crown and title, Herrin received an $1,800 tuition waiver scholarship. She received an additional $500 wardrobe allowance and a $700 Children’s Miracle Network scholarship.
First runner-up in the pageant was Autumn Circle, a sophomore from Blackwell, who also won the outstanding talent award and received a $1,200 tuition waiver scholarship and a $350 cash scholarship.
Ashleigh Hamil, a sophomore from Sand Springs, was named second runner-up and won the swimsuit award and the congeniality award receiving a total of $1,200 Central tuition waiver and a $250 cash scholarship.
Danielle Kimbley, a freshman from Oklahoma City, accepted the People’s Choice Award and the Directors Award receiving a $100 Cash Scholarship.
