UCO HOCKEY TO COMPETE IN 2012 ACHA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
The University of Central Oklahoma hockey team is headed to the 2012 American College Hockey Association National (ACHA) Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio.
The single-elimination tournament begins today in the Hoover Arena at Kent State University.
The No. 15 Bronchos ended the regular season with a 15-22-1 record, finishing with a 4-1 loss to the No. 9 University of Oklahoma Sooners.
“They had a tough first period, but the team still played well against OU,” said Steve Gordon, general manager.
“That last loss won’t have any effect on them going into this tournament.”
The Bronchos’ first game will be tonight at 8:30 p.m. against No. 18 Kent State in the West Arena.
Having missed out on the national tournament last year, the team has prepared to take advantage of this opportunity, Gordon said.
“They’ll get in there and do what they can to get the job done. And for the seniors, this is their last shot. So they’re going to make a lasting impression.”
Central’s hockey team is a club sport at the university. The Sport Clubs Program, a part of the UCO Wellness Center, consists of recognized student organizations that are established to promote and develop common sport and recreation related activity.
Each club has been founded, organized, managed and maintained by volunteer student leaders. Other club sports at Central include men’s soccer, rugby, sailing and bowling.
